Rowan’s Law
Today is Rowan’s Law Day.
Rowan Stringer was tragically taken far too soon after suffering a concussion. Her parents, Gordon and Kathleen, and her sister Cassie, are remarkable people—resilient, determined, and the driving force behind making sure no other family experiences this kind of loss.
Working on Rowan’s Law remains one of the most meaningful experiences of my career. I had the privilege of collaborating with neurosurgeons, physicians, mental health experts, sport analysts, athletes, and colleagues across party lines—including Catherine Fife and John Fraser. Together, we built something lasting and purposeful.
But there’s another side of the story. At one of my lowest points with depression, I had stripped my office bare of every award, article, and photo, ready to resign because I had lost hope. That was the day Rowan’s parents first came to see me. I didn’t know how I could help, but I knew I couldn’t say no.
Saying yes to them not only helped create Rowan’s legacy—it gave me hope and purpose at a time when I needed it most. For anyone struggling with mental illness, especially bipolar disorder as I do, finding purpose can be a lifeline. Rowan’s Law became that for me.
So today, I remember Rowan. I thank her parents for their resilience—and for giving me a chance to be part of something bigger than myself. Their trust restored my power when I felt powerless.
